Caregiving can be hard. We see you.

Beyond Hospice is here to help. Welcome to our Resources for Caregivers.

It’s easy to be overwhelmed.

We have curated some of the best support out there for caregivers, so you don’t have to. You’ve got enough going on.

First of all, breathe. Caring for those we love that are going through a hard time is tough on everyone, especially those whose lives are most affected with the day to day realities of care.  It’s hard work, and sacrifice, and impossible to do perfectly.

Every situation is different. Every day can be different.

Be gentle with yourself.

And know your Beyond Hospice staff is here with you.

Grace and love abound.

A Section Just About Loving Someone with Memory Loss -

because it's a whole thing.

  • Caregiving and Ambiguous Loss

Many caregivers of individuals with memory disorders or dementia report that the main problem is not the illness itself, but the ambiguity and uncertainty it causes.

  • Book - Travelers to Unimaginable Lands: Stories of Dementia, the Caregiver, and the Human Brain

Finally - a book that explains, so compassionately, that symbiotic relationship between caregiver and person with Alzheimer's. Why do they (still) have the power to poke at all the sore places from childhood? Why do I still argue when I know it's a brain disease? This book is about the complexity of the caregiver, us humans as social beings, why caregiving is so very hard with those we love the most.

  • Podcast - Let's Not Be Kidding with Gavin Crawford

So descriptive. So touching. Gavin takes us through the years living with his Mom's disease, from the early months of denial to the dispersing of her ashes. Yes Gavin is a stand-up comic and yes it felt good to laugh, and he sure can tell a good story. But mostly, it felt good to not feel so alone. (You can skip episode 2).

  • Book - The 36 Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for People Who Have Alzheimer's and Other Dementias

This book has been the go-to handbook for 40 years and it's easy to see why. So very practical. Short, organized what-to-do-when-and-if bits of info just when you need them at your fingertips.

  • Movie - The Great Lillian Hall

Starring Jessica Lange and Cathy Bates, this movie chronicles the realization, diagnosis, and consequences of memory loss to a famed Broadway actor. We experience it up close, real time, brilliantly performed, with compassion and mercy and love. The diagnosis scene was especially good. Streaming on Prime, Hulu, and Max.

  • Movie - The Father

Starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Coleman, the acting is spellbinding - or is it the story? The mind, slipping, as seen through the father's eyes, as people, time, and spaces lose their anchor to reality. No wonder critics kept calling it 'haunting'. And yet, I left feeling such compassion, it helped in real life. Streaming on Hulu and Prime.

  • Find Your People - Support Groups Just for You

Some in person, some on line, hosted by the Alzheimer's Association.

  • Technology Can Help!

So many new gadgets! Click here for a New York Times Wirecutter review of the best out there.

  • A Poem - Two Mothers Remembered

    Tissues? Get your tissues.

Beyond Hospice is so excited to welcome The Bardo, a new venture in the Twin Cities, so much to offer

The Bardo’s mission is to restore reverence to the universal experience of death and bring more meaning, beauty and support to every moment along the way.

They also offer a supportive hand for the practical challenges that come with this territory:  things like understanding medical terminology and treatment options, and intentionally tending to the spiritual and emotional needs of the grieving, the suffering and those who are caring for them.

An excellent resource is Kate Bowler -

In her words she offers “free resources, conversations, blessings, and tools that offer thicker language and a more nuanced hope to help sustain caregivers who provide so much (often thankless) support for their loved ones at the risk of burnout and exhaustion.”

Life is so beautiful. Life is so hard. For everyone.
